Amos Went West
To make a long story short, Amos is my second great grand uncle on my mother's side. He is a genealogical mystery and here's why....
I first discovered Amos when I was asked to make a “family tree” in high school. My mother presented an original chart created by my grandfather...in pencil, no less...and in my grandfather's handwriting he listed an Amos Munson with a note under his name "went west." That was all we knew about him and I became intrigued. Not only did I wonder what happened to Amos, I also decided if I ever started my own business it would be named "Amos Went West." For me, his spirit of adventure made him a genealogical mystery and my company is centered on both the spirit of family heritage and individual growth.
I come from a long line of business-minded ancestors, most of them on my mother’s side of the family. The alternative to following these ancestors was to follow my father's side of the family into the coal mining industry.I don't know about you, but I don't think I could ever be a coal miner. That is a tough and dangerous job...my respect goes out to all miners as I could never do what they do!
Anyway, even though I have an unconfirmed lead I am still looking for Amos. Until then I celebrate his and all of my ancestral stories with this adventure of my own!
